Hi,

When I purchase dvd -r and dvd -rw the cost range for different brands are considerable. I am interested in getting higher quality video for my dvd backups. Is there really that much difference in video recording quality (i.e. the backup video having the same quality as the original) between one brand that costs twice as much as another. For example DVD Pro -r or -rw for 81 cents a disc or Ritek for $1.59 a disc. Thanks for your help.

There is absolutely no difference to the actual video quality. When we talk about dvd-r/dvd-rw quality, we are really talking about three things.

1) Reliability.
2) Compatability.
3) Consistency.

Reliability covers things like dye-stability (the lifetime of the actual materials used) and dye-quality (ability to easily maintain fast write speeds).

Compatability tells us if we can use the media in a wide variety of different DVD players, be they stand-alone video players, game consoles or PC DVD drives.

Consistency - Can you be sure that one brand of blank discs remains the same quality when you buy another batch, and again 6 months later?

If you want to talk about quality of the actual video content - that will depend on many factors (method of recording, quality of input signal etc). It will not depend on what brand of media you use.

Currently, I can only really recommend that you use Ritek manufactured discs. However, if you are only interested in personal use, you may find the the cheaper Princo manufactured discs work well.

Ritek are very reliable, very high quality and you can almost guarantee that every blank Ritek media will record perfectly.

Princo are very reliable, quite high quality (compatability isn't as good as Ritek), and seem to be reasonably consistent.__

Maybe a simple answer will suffice. All DVD blank discs must be of the correct quality standard to carry the DVD logo. Although this does not extend to manufacturing quality which in essence means reliability in playback (eg freezing or pixelation) it does mean that actual quality of recording and hence picture playback may only vary with the type of burner you use and since most burners meet industry standard you should not notice any difference in picture quality.

Both are still quite complicated answers :-D

In terms of quality - it is a reference to the writing surface of the disc. The better the dye is, the less likely that problems will occur, irrelevant what bruner or software you use.

To complicate matters further, as Discmania said, burner's and/or software can help or hinder in the strive for quality.

Checked the prices for Riteks a coupla days ago. They're really cheap now. .95 for a Ritek w/logo.

Prices are so cheap in fact that you can forgo Ritek and buy the branded stuff.

I agree with that. Even the more expensive Clone Disc is only £1.15 including VAT when you buy 100
