PS2 Linux/Black Rhino Linux?

Alright ladies and gentlemen, I am considering using a PS2 or X-Box as an on the cheap car based PC/multimedia center. I have done some research on an X-Box, but now I want to look at a PS2 for the job. Here's what I want to do, I want to be able to run/play MP3s and video files from within the system and such. Basically, multimedia only, with an emphasis on also being a take anywhere type computer. So, I understand I will need the Linux kit to do this, but can I run/play MP3s and video files from the hard drive using either Black Rhino or the official PS2 Linux? Can I compile programs that might not be in RPM format for this particular distribution? Does Black Rhino just install when I put the CD in after installing PS2 Linux? Is a mod chip required? Sorry, I have so many questions and such, I am just wanting to get a good handle on it. Thanks for your help!
