Welll thats not a lot of info you're givin us!
1. Drive do you have?
2. ASPI?
3. What media? CD? DVD? If CD, provide ATIPs for the media that works
4. OS?
5. Firmware?

Have u ever let it finish scanning? What i mean is that some drives take friggen forever to recognize a disc and if you do anything like open My COmputer that process gets terminated and you wont find a disc.

I dont suspect it's a worm but the system conflict is definitely the problem you need to address. If you gave me some more details I'd be better able to point you in the right direction.

Resource conflict.... i'm gonna go out on a limb and guess IRQ conflict cuz rarely is it a DMA conflict anymore.

So the problem is with Windows and resource allocation rather than a hardware one. Try uninstalling the device and rebooting.

To Check for DMA: (1) Control Panel, (2) System, (3) Goto the Hardware Tab, (4) Device Manager, (5) CD/DVDROM (6) Select the drive, right click and uninstall (7) Reboot.
