I'm trying to get back into the modding scene (been away since dreamcast) but am having a little bit of trouble getting my bearing in the 360 scene.

My local hobby shop is offering NME and Globe chips + installation. After doing a bit of research I'm starting to think they might be a bust. The both claim to be undetectable of XBL except when using backups but I've read a few post of people claiming they got clipped with store bought games.
Does anyone have any first hand experience with the NME or Globe that can offer a bit of guidance?

I've also been looking at going the firmware route but that route doesn't look much easier either. My computer is old and the mother board doesn't support pci or have a sata connection. Also, my 360 has a Hitachi dvd drive and all the best firmware and guides seem to be for the samsung.

I could have the 360 flashed at the same hobby shop. Near as I can tell firmware flashing is just as risky for Hitachi 360-dvd drive users as mod chipping in terms of getting pinched on XBL.

So I'm in a bit of a bind and don't know which way to go. I'll gladly trade XBL for the ability to run backups on the 360 and am more concerned with inadvertently bricking the system.

So flashing seems to be the way to go and the best firmware for the Hitachi seems to be the OPA Xtreme 2.3 firmware. So before I throw down the money to get it done is there anything I'm missing the in understanding of the differences between the utility of mod chips vs flashing? Am I headed in the right direction with flashing OPA Xtreme 2.3?
