I am trying to make my PS2 able to play GH1/2 custom songs. I have everything I need except a way to make my PS2 boot custom discs.

I want to make sure I get the right thing to boom custom DVD-Rs to my PS2.

I have a SCPH-30001 R, v5/6 PS2.

I would rather not put a mod chip in (I am almost going to say I won't do it). What can I get to assuredly play GH1/2 custom DVD-Rs?

I am looking at Swap Magic 3 or GameShark 2. Please point me in the right direction.

Swap Magic, a mod-chip or HD Advance will work in booting custom versions of Guitar Hero 1 and 2. The only reasons why they won't work however could be you either burnt the custom GH game on bad quality DVD media like Memorex and Fujifilm or you must up during the editing process of customizing your songs. Unless the media IDs on the DVDs you're using aren't CMC MAGs, they're most likely bad, and even if they are not CMC MAGs, I'd highly recommend Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. You can check a list of media IDs here corresponding to their respective brand name. You can easily check for media IDs on your DVDs by using DVD Decryptor and such. Oh, and don't ever use DVD RWs -- DVD rewritables.

If you get a cheat device like Gameshark 2 or Action Replay, you would need to consider getting Cogswap and such to work in order to boot backed-up games, or in your case, a custom Guitar Hero 1 or 2 game edit.
