Camcorders without Mic input

Howdy all,

Just starting to mess around with digital video and looking to buy a lower end camera to experiment with. I'm frustrated that very few cameras have mic inputs. In fact, the Canon ZR800 seems to be the only one I've found so far, and I'd much rather get the ZR850 for some of the other enhancements it has.

Why on earth do so few cameras have mic inputs? Doesn't seem like its that much to ask and I doubt it adds much in terms of cost or weight. What gives?

Since I want to try doing some semi-serious work (doing some amateur documentary stuff), I just don't see how the built in audio will be sufficient. Most things I've read suggest that built in is fine for home movies but not much else.

Am I putting too much emphasis on external audio? Any advice?
