AVI versus DVD , size and quality

sorry if this question has been asked before, but I did a search for this question and found no answer.

Why , when I have AVI movies with the size of 780meg do we still need dvd , VOB files when people viewing these movies can not tell the difference by looking at its original DVD or re-renderd AVI format ?

When the dvd takes up 4.7gig

If all DVD Players played .AVI files then the original files will play but in the devine wisdom of the Experts they decided we needed a new format which is the DVD format w/ the .vob,.bup and ifo files. The .AVI files will play fine on a computer but when you put them into a player the player will give you an error message. My Standalone DVD Player plays both w/ no problems
