I'm trying to remove ads and previews from some DVD's. Most of the previews windows in VobBlanker are just black so I don't know what to delete. Why won't the preview windows work for all cells.
Thanks.

basically you can blank those because if there was some kind of video it would show up.
here is a mini guide for blanking warnings.

If you click on the VTS titles in the top half of the window you will see its PGC's in the lower half of the window. Click or in some cases double click on one of the PGC's at the bottom half of the window and click on Preview at the right side. A window will open so you can view the PGC or cells. Click on play. If there is any video within that cell, it should play at this time. Sometimes when the cell size is sooooo small, you won't see anything, just a black screen. Like 300bowler said, you can just BLANK them out. I usually just KEEP them since they hardly take up any space at all.

is the dvd your trying to copy real or a copy???
if its a copy then someone might have all ready the previews gone.
thats the only way i can explain why thats happening.

all most forgot are the protections all ready gone because VobBlanker can't handle new dvds on its own it needs something like AnyDVD to get rid of the new protecions.

I am trying to copy a real DVD. It is the whole First season of lost. I didn't find anything except the 4 episodes and a whole lot of black screens with VobBlanker. I know there is other stuff on it but I can't find it.

right your prob is that VOB can't handle the new protections so follow this guide and make sure you use only the newest software versions.so you have 3 options
1.use this guide

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

2. buy AnyDVD so you wont have to use anything besides AnyDVD and voblanker + your burning software

3. buy AnyDVD and clonedvd2(same as voblanker but easy to use and it burns dvds)

with AnyDVD and clonedvd2 you get a 21 day trial.try it out you wont be disapointed

Thanks for the help guys. The New DVDFab + VobBlanker +DVD Shrink +ImgBurn Guide is what started me in the whole process of backing up DVD's. I never had much luck with just using Srink. Once I found the guide and loaded the software I've had complete success. The next step was to get rid of unwanted screens. I read the VobBlanker guide but it assumes that you can see what you want to change. I see a lot of black screens but not the things I want to get rid of. I do see the episodes. Last night I used VobBlanker on Night in the Museum. It worked just like the VobBlanker guide said it should. I think Boykiller (you have picked a very strange name) is right, new protections is my problem. It seems to me a lot of people had problems with AnyDVD. I will go back an re-read the post about AnyDVD.
Thanks,

Every episodic dvd I've backed up has worked with DVD Decrypter by itself. I have never had to use other programs on these dvd's like Ripit4me, Dvd Fab HD Decrypter or AnyDVD. I have not backed up Lost but I'm sure DVD Decrypter will work with it also. The encryption on the episodic dvd's is weak, not like movies. How many episodes are on each dvd? My guess is 4. You might want to rip the dvd to the hard drive and then use VobBlanker to split the episodes between two single layer discs.

Here's a little info about backing up episodic dvd's using the following method that I posted on May 13. All episodic dvd's that I have backed up can be ripped with DVD Decrypter by itself with no problems. It takes about 20 minutes to rip the full dvd. It takes about 5 minutes to process the first half of the dvd using VobBlanker and about 5 minutes to process the second half if you follow my instructions below. It then takes about 12 minutes to burn the first half of the episodes to a single layer dvd and about 12 minutes to burn the second half of the episodes to another single layer dvd. It takes less than an hour to process an episodic dvd from start to finish. If you use single layer dvd's, the cost is as little as 20 cents each X 2 if purchased in packs of 100 as opposed to a double layer dvd at about $1.50 - $2.00 each. I use Ripit4me on my movies but DVD Decrypter will work by itself on the episodic dvd's. Follow the instructions below and you should have no problems.

*** You can use VobBlanker and keep all the extras and all menus intact and in working order. Rip the episodic dvd to your HD, use VobBlanker to KEEP the first half of the episodes and BLANK out the second half. For example, if the dvd has 8 episodes, keep episodes
1-4 and blank out 5-8. While you're at it you can also blank out any previews and other junk. After you backup this way, use VobBlanker to do the same thing except BLANK out episodes 1-4 and KEEP 5-8. Make sure you use a different destination folder for the second half than you used for the first half. This way you can have all episodes divided into 2 SL discs (1 of 2 & 2 of 2) which help keep the cost down and you don't sacrifice any video quality. Then, there's no need to use Shrink, just burn the end result to 2 SL dvd's. I find it works great for the episodic dvd's and VobBlanker doesn't take a lot of time to do it's job either. You can label your discs like this: The King of Queens S4 D2 (1 of 2) and The King of Queens S4 D2 (2 of 2) meaning season 4 disc 2 having the first 4 episodes on (1 of 2) and the last 4 episodes on (2 of 2). ***

If you haven't used VobBlanker before, I would suggest you rip any movie to your hard drive and use it to practice on beforehand.

@sseverett,
have you tried looking in the menus, thats where a lot of warnings are at and other things too, like in my guide,
also if you ripped the Lost dvds with DVDFab HD that gets rid of the copy protection so that isn't why you don't see anything, plus i think that the movie studios just put a whole bunch of useless junk on the dvds like added cells that dont have any video's on them.

also are you using the bigger preview screens and not the little one in the upper right corner. you can access the bigger screens by right-Clicking and choosing preview.

edit-
BTW if you are going to try AnyDVD with VOBB, then you have to use version 2.1.2.0 of VobBlanker since the newest version of VOBB(2.1.3.0) wont work with anydvd

@300

I have Vobb v.2120 & v.2130. I haven't used 2130. Is there much of a difference between the two versions? I've been using 2120 with no problems.

i still use both versions too, mainly the newest one because i use DVDFab HD more than AnyDVD, but both version should have came with a chanelog to show whats been added and the bug fixes.

basically the biggest difference is that the 2.1.2.0. version can not handle the dvd's that have more than 99 VTS TitleSets, i believe there were like 3 or so of the dvd's that had more, but i cant remember the names.

I am using DVDFab HD and it works perfectly. I never thought about it, but you are right, it should strip all copy protection from disk and give me a clean file. I'm not against buying AnyDVD but I have programs that seem to work fine; I just don't fully understand how to run them.

That's a great idea to split the lost episodes and put them on single layer disks. I will try that. It is taking Shrink about 6 hours to do a deep analyses and then compress it at about 60%. It would sure speed up thing to not compress.

300bowler - Thanks for the tip on looking in the menus for stuff. I will look there. I'm hesitant to remove anything from the menu or movie because last time I tried that somehow I lost the whole movie. I just blanked one of the cells in the real large movie file but some how I lost the movie also.

Thanks

@sseverett

The FBI warnings and other junk are usually in the VIDEO_TS.vob file. But they can also be located within the menu section of the main movie file. The previews will be separate VOB files in case you want to blank them out also. VobBlanker will not open or process files that are encrypted. You need to rip them to the HD and make sure your ripping software of choice removes the copy protection. If you want to check the menus within the main movie file, just double click on the main movie VOB (the largest VOB file under "titleset") and it will bring up a window. Click on the listing called "Language Units". It will then give a listing of PGC's under the Menu PGC's section. Right click and choose preview for each of them that has "Keep" under the Action heading. It will bring up yet another window where you can preview that single PGC. Once you have previewed, choose close and decide whether you want to KEEP or BLANK the PGC. Move onto the next one. Once you have stripped the warnings and previews from the movie, choose a destination file name for the output folder located in the upper left corner of the program window. Then just click Process at the bottom of the window.
I would suggest that you spot check the movie from the hard drive by watching bits of the movie and to make sure the menus all work properly before you burn to disc and possibly create a coaster if something went wrong. Good Luck!

like Orion250 said almost all the time all the warnings and trailers and other stuff are in different TitleSets(VTS) than the main move and menus for the main movie

also that is what i used to do to all my episode disks too, and i came up with that way because i liked to keep the menus and chapters menus while having great picture quality too, but now i use DVD-RB Pro W/CCE, just to save a disc(yeah, i know i'm cheap)

@orion250,
extremely good explanation on how to look for warnings.

I have DVDShrink, DVDDecrypter, DVDFabDecrypter, VOBBlanker, FixVTS and your guide.

I have three DVDs I have put on hard disk with DVDFabDecrypter. These DVDs took much longer to do than usual, there were probably many read errors that couldn't be corrected by retries. WinDVD plays the files from the HD with a few hiccups, picture breakup, like when a DVD player has problems. But DVDShrink hangs analyzing them.

Is there software which will analyze DVD files for such problems (probably resulting from scratches on the original DVD) and modify the files so it is playable or shrinkable even though it may result in artifacts.

I have not used VOBBlanker or FixVTS because it is not clear to me what they do, the one word label on the buttons doesn't tell me much.

Thanks.

Using FREE tools....
The process you should take is (seems to get the best results IMHO):

1)Rip using DVDFab decrypter
2)Process the video files thru FixVTS
3)Open the files using DVD shrink for reauthoring/transcoding etc..
4)Have shrink auto-burn the files to DVD disk using DVD decrypter (ISO files) or Nero (both ISO image files or standard video files .bup, .ifo,.vob)

Note: you can also manually burn the files as well using the same apps, imgburn, Roxio, or what ever you favorite app is (remember to burn no greater than 1/2 the rated speed of the media).

Here you can get FixVTS (free) and a simple guide on use.

johnl123, I had already written the DVD to HD with DVDFabDecrypter. As you said, I ran it through FixVTS and DVDShrink.

DVDShrink was almost though analyzing it (99%?) when it stopped saying it encountered a read error which caused it to access an invalid memory location in SPINAL_TAP\VTS_02_3.VOB. I presume bad data made it calculate a bad pointer.

Does VOBBlanker have tools which can fix this? Thanks.

Vobblanker can also be used to correct the problem, if FixVTS didn't help, vobblanker is what to try using next.

get it here
http://download.videohelp.com/jsoto/VobB...er_2130_exe.zip

Simple use of:
Input-->select the VIDEO_TS.IFO file from the files ripped by DVDFab
Output-->Select an output location (Create a folder and name it, create a folder within that one and call it VIDEO_TS, put the files in that folder)
Press PROCESS and wait.

When done, there will be a new set of files created in the VIDEO_TS folder you created, open those files using shrink and see if all is well.

johnl123, can I use VOBBlanker just to fix that one VOB file?

There are a lot of function buttons on the right side of VOBBlanker. Which one(s) are good for this problem (probably corrupted data which produces a bad pointer)?

Thanks.

VTS_02_3.VOB.

it looks like this is part of the special features.
so you should be able to Re-Author the movie, however if you want to keep the menus, than you can blank VTS_02.VOB by selecting it and Right-Click and select Blank, that will blank all the PGC's in VTS_02.
and after you process it you might not even have to shrink it with dvd shrink since the movie is under hour and a half.

Note: i am looking at the Region 1 disk of that movie

Thanks. I will try both methods. Some questions --

1. What are PGCs and what do they do?
2. What does the Blank function actually do to PGCs?
3. How would I write the files in the directory structure to DVD without using DVDShrink? What encodes the files into an ISO file so DVDDecrypter can write the DVD?

after you hit the process button in VOBB you go to the folder (were the output files go) and they are in dvd-compliant files already(VOB,BUP,IFO).
you can check to see how big the folder is and if it is under 4.35GB than you dont need to use shrink, you can burn them with your favorite burning program,
you can burn that folder with IMGburn, as IMGburn(FREE) can burn both ISO file and a folder.
here is a guide on how to burn a folder with IMGburn
