My dvd player skips a lot when I use DVD-R but works fine when I use -RW. Could it be that my dvd player doesn't read -R that well or should I use a laser cleaner. Do those cleaners actually work or what??

Not every player reads *every* type of DVD (I'm not talking about regions). My father's older DVD player will only read DVD- and not DVD+, whereas mine will read both. Maybe your player has similar preferences.

Oh really cuz mine is an older, well about 3 year old dvd player. Do all the new dvd players read both types fine. The dvd's play fine for a while then all of the sudden they start skipping really bad.

Even with newer players, not all players handle all formats of discs.
If you have the book that came with your player it should have a list
of which formats that player uses. If you don't have the manual
anymore, I would suggest going to the website for the company that
your player came from and looking at the online manual.
By the way does your disc play all the way through on your pc without
any problems? If it does that would be a good indication that it is
incompatible with your stand alone.

Couldn't get to the link to edit previous post. Also wanted to add-
if you have the same problem when playing the disc on your pc it may
be that you burned on a defective disc. You might want to try burning
on another brand disc if you have one.

if you want to know what formats your stand alone dvd player will or will not play go to this web site and put the model number of your player in, http://www.videohelp.com/

Well I can't find it when I click on that link. Do you think that you could be more specific and tell me exactly where it is at? By the way I have a sylvania SRD3900 as my stand alone. I just need to know if it plays -R. Thanks guys

I checked out the manual for your player. It can be found at
http://www.sylvanizconsumerelectronics.com/pdf/om/SRD3900.pdf
On page 7 of the manual it says this player will play DVD Video,
DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, Audio CD, CD-R/RW, and Audio CD MP3.
But it goes on to say that this player will not play some discs
made on a personal computer. There is a whole paragraph to this
effect. It sounds like this computer may be really picky.
I would suggest you try a +disc and see if that works. Also if
you use Shrink you could try booktyping to another format.
(I use a Philips 5960 DVD player and it will play anything I put in
it. I also own several other brands that won't.) With this player
you are going to have to try several different programs and discs
and when you find one that works with your player stay with it.

OK do you know if the new dvd players would play everything. Like i said earlier my dvd player is like 2 or 3 years old. I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to this type of stuff. New DVD players are only like 150 dollars. Just asking. Thank you for all your help though.

pcbears,
Some Standalone DVD Player like certain blank DVD's whereas my DVD Player will play anything. They should though not have a problem playing (+)DVD's if it is a newer model. You can find the players at Wal-Mart, Target , BestBuy from around $40.00 and up.

I agree with what CarMike said. I would certainly try using a +disc
before you give up on your player. A lot of my friends only have
players that work with + discs. Also I would use a good brand of
blanks and write at 4 times speed. Be sure no other programs are
running when you burn. I don't know what burning program you are
using, but I sure like Imgburn. It's a free program.
If you do decide to get another DVD player, you shouldn't have to
spend $150. I bought my Philips Upconverting DVD player on sale
at Best Buy for $70. There are good players for less-I have seen
them anywhere from $30 up. The only reason I am so happy with the
Philips is I haven't seen a disc it wouldn't play.
You didn't say which programs you are using to write your disc. If
you are really new at this, I would suggest you look at this link:
http://webpages.charter.net/bacitup
It has a lot of the favorite programs and really simple guides that
take you through them step by step. Personally my favorites are
AnyDVD(a purchased program, Shrink (free), and Imgburn (free). If
you want all free programs us DVD Fab Decrypter instead of AnyDVD.
I have not seen the movie that I can't back up with this combination.
Don't feel bad about your player because it only uses certain formats
well. My son has a very expensive Bose and it only plays -Rs.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Well I'm just using DVD Shrink with Nero 6. That's all I'm using to back up my movies.
