I figured it would be okay to ask this question since this is Divx/Svid.
I want a player that can handle DivX, mainly, I'm not very familiar with XviD. I have vids in AVI format and want to watch them on TV instead of computer.
I would like to stay under $70 if possible.

Bermuda dollars? No wait, Zimbabwean dollars?
Actually if you downloaded these avi's then there is probably a 99.9% chance that they are compressed with XviD and not DivX.

I bought a cheap phillips DVD player that will play divx/xvid for $65 bucks at walmart. Just look at the logo's on the player, if you see "Divx Certified" you should be good. Most DivX players will play XviD in todays market.

Sorry, I meant US dollars
@ ugc
I did hear about a dvd player like that
Is this the one you are talking about?
I heard that these had a bad capacitor or something and that it would cause them to die after like 2 and half months.
Overall what brands do you guys think are best for Divx/Xvid?

I have a Philips 5960 that I purchased on sale at Best Buy for $70.
I've had it for quite sometime with no problems. It plays every-
thing I put in it.
You might check out Techbargains.com. They list all the best buys
on the internet and change their site twice a day. I have seen some
really good buys on there.
Also you might look at some of the threads on Afterdawn under DVD
players. There is a lot of info on the different brands.

I saw some of those on ebay. Could you use any E(IDE) hard drive on it?
Or is there a special kind of hard drive it uses, and then i'm going to have to transfer stuff to it via USB or Firewire right?

If you buy anything other then an Xbox you're throwing your money away!
See one in action and you'll question how the other manufacturers are allowed to rip you off!

I have the Philips 5960/37; liked it so much bought another. Have owned both for over a year-0 problems; often on sale ($49-$59) at CC; was until last month the latest version in US & Canada; if you get this one go to the Philips site & dl & install the firmware update. It is a 5mb file you have to unzip & burn to CD. The replacement 5982/37 was just on coupon @ Costco for $59.95. You can go to Philips site & compare specs.
These machines have played every DivX, Xvid, or avi file I've tried. I normally dl the files to a 6GB Seagate jump drive & view them via the USB port on the front of the player. Whatever is worthy of keeping is then burned to DVD.
Now how do you think I feel about the Pioneer DV606 I paid $400 for in 1998(Costco, the in town rate was about $700) It will only play Region 1 DVD+R discs; can't update firmware, no USB, no HDMI, blah blah blah. It's not even hooked up anymore.
Hope you find somthing you like as much as I like these.

Thanks for the links. Don't think I'll have any trouble following
the directions-just didn't quite know where to look to find them.

Thank you very much guys, that player (Philips 5960) looks like my best bet. I really like the USB port and HDMI. Also the hacked firmwares available.
Thx again.

Compare the DVP5982 with the DVP5960. You are really getting a better machine. If you intend hooking up a USB drive, go DVP5982 because it's USB port is USB2.0, a much faster transfer speed.

DVP 5960 is USB 2.0, the big difference in these machines is that the DVP 5982 can up-convert to 1080P. Why they would add this & delete the HDMI connection (specs on Philips web site do not show one) is beyond me.

DVP5982 does have HDMI out.
If you have a 5960 or 5982 & curse the lack of an eject button - keep the 'stop' button depressed a few extra seconds; it will open the tray.
Have a simple hack to make these units Region free if anyone is interested.

I'm interested in a 5982 for the features and cost. I made my Phillips 642 region free through the remote. Can this be done on this unit as well?

Philips DVP 5960-5982 region change instructions.
1. Turn on the unit
2. Open the loading tray
3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
5. Enter 138931
6. You will now see the current region code displayed
7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
8. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
9. Press "OK" on the remote
Enjoy all region play back.
Purchased a new 5982 a week ago; it needed a firmware update.

Not all external plays all formats.
The External is 50.00 each.. some comes with hard disk and some don't.
