I just bought a modded xbox off ebay but i dont know if it has been soft modded or had a modchip installed. I asked the seller and he didnt know. Is there any way to tell which it is without opening the xbox up? (the xbox has an evox dashboard on it)

thanks ill have a look for them.
I can get the case off to show the hard drive and disk drive but it is the screw to remove the top tray that is worn away. i also have a spare xbox hard drive. so could i test if it was hard or soft modded by switching the hard drive?
or is there any files that will show up when i connect to my pc via ftp on a soft modded xbox hard drive that are not present on one with a modchip?

You mean the gold screws inside the Xbox.

If it's the middle one, just use some force, they are not held too deeply into the plastic and we don't really need them anyway!
Or, better still, have you got some small drill bits? Drill the screw out! Sriously, you don't need that screw!

Yeah i mean them, I got inside this morning and have replaced the screw.
So yeah turns out my xbox does have a modchip however i have no idea what type it is as i it has no labeling (Apart from "gf 2003" on the top of chip). Do you know what type of chip this is? I took some pictures of the motherboard and the chip.
This is mother board with chip in;

This is underside of chip (sorry abit blury)

The Top of the chip

Amd motherboard without chip (probably useless but hey!)

I am looking to change the hard drive on the xbox to a 120gig wd one. However i dont know if this chip will support hdd swap option as it is so old? If it does not Could i easily replace this chip with a new one that supports hd swap, Without Soldering ECT and what modchip would you reccomend?
(BTW Thanks For the help much appreciated!)

Not sure which chip it is, but it's a good, solderless one.
With the chip installed, all you have to do is replace the drives, start up the console with a 'Slayers v2.7' disc and select 'Reformat'.
All Done!

Yes, its not a solderless installation, most xbox mods are removable like that... Im not sure what chip that is either but its one of those cheap LPC mods that u can make eaisly. I think its compabible to Evolution-X n that can do hdd swap. Since I dont know much Xbox mods i dont really know...But since u do have a modchip u could eaisly format it then lock it (optional) with Slayers v2.7 like chunkhead said.
Edit: When I said cheap LPC mods I ment cheap SST49LF020(?) chip mods.
