Hi All,

I have some small movies in .dat format that I'd like to edit. Nothing special, just trim the ends and maybe cut some out of the middle and glue the pieces back together. Can anybody explain how to do that or point me to a guide for it?

I know I can convert the .dat files to .mpeg and then edit, but I like having the movies in .dat (or .vob) format so I can watch them with WinDVD instead of Windows Media Player and I worry about losing video quality with too many conversions.

Any advice would be appreciated.

This is a very primative technique of sorts but it should suit you:
1. Open the DAT file in VirtualDub (you may have to convert to MPEG first)
2. Do your editing there
3. Output to AVI (ramp the quality really high as to preserve as much quality as you can).
4. Use TMPGEnc to encode it back to MPEG1

Thanks, but will the output from TMPGEnc be in .dat format or .mpg format? I'd like to keep it in .dat.
