I have a RCA 8300-N VCR-DVD Recorder combo, and i HATE it. It has difficulty playing home-burned DVD's, is very picky about what brand of media it will accept, and lately has had difficulty playing commercial DVd's. It won't read most brands of blank media, and even has trouble reading discs it has burned itself.
So, I am looking for a new VCR-DVD Recording combo. I am hoping that someone is happy with theirs, and will let me know what brand/model they like.
Key features that I want: accepts blank Lightscribe media, so I can record a TV show and Lightscribe a label later on my computer; will read various brand of media and will read DVD's authored on my computer; has rear S-video inputs for better quality input from my satellite receiver/Tivo (I looked at a Sony, which had composite in, and claimed better video quality with s-video out... but garbage in, garbage out, right?); preferably will accept and record to Dual Layer media and Re-Writable media.
I know, I'm probably asking a lot, but if I'm going to spend $300 (I'd like to spend less, of course) on a DVD recorder, I want it to play whatever I put into it. + or - R/RW doesn't matter to me, although one that does both formats would be very nice (then I could truly get what's on sale, regardless of brand or type).
Another option I am considering is not getting a combo unit, but getting a separate VCR (for all those Disney tapes we have), and DVD recorder and hooking them together. Does anyone think that will be a better (maybe cheaper?) option?
