Here in Hong Kong the patching/modding is performed by numerous shops and this week I found several offering to do so for HKD80. They will downgrade my 3.11 Japanese model to 1.50 then up to 3.40OE (or is it OA?). Is this something I should do as I am really worried about bricking mine?

Ok dude dont bother wasting your money firstly. If you read the readme for the downgrade there is a 99.9% chance u wont get bricked.... Think of it this way... Updating to sony firmware is the same risk as downgrading.

Thanks mate. I am thinking that HKD80 is a lot less than the cost of Lumines for the PSP which is a game that is not on my list of games to get. So I guess that's my logic buy Lumines or pay HKD80.

You said getting custom firmware is cheaper so pay the HKD80.If you want to start downgrading PSP's go for Lumines and make some cash back(but it might be patched)Just pay the HKD80

Lol! Everyone is telling you different things. If it's cheaper to pay for it to be done then you may as well, you won't mess up anything and if they do they owe YOU.

How much is HKD80? Isn't that like $8? I'd just pay the guy...

#1: 2.81 -> 3.03 -> 3.11 DoH (no more :D)
#2: 1.00 -> 1.5 -> 3.03oe-c
#3: Ceramic white 1.5 -> 3.03oe-c -> 3.40oe
Whatever happens, happens...

Sorry but I should have mentioned HKD80 is USD10 (ish). OK, I'll pay for the job.
Should I prepare an iso in the memory stick so that I can test it straight after he's done?

Well, he probably will have something for you to test.
But, eh.. why not. Create a folder called ISO in the root of the memory stick, and put iso/cso in there. You do need an actual umd to play most games. You might have to mess with some of the settings, but I'm sure that guy will know what to do.
