i was wondering if you could do anything besides updating the firmware on the drives to play back ups, because that is a little confusing to me. shouldn't there be a way to download something on to your Xbox hard drive using xsata or xport you could use? also, iv heard of using a usb device to update the firmware, but ive only heard of it for hitachi drives. is there one for samsung yet?

No firmware or a firmware modchip are the only ways. The 360 itself hasn't been truly cracked like with Xbox. The only thing going is firmware which exploits an big oversight in security on the DVD drive.
