There really aren't too many reviews on chips out there - but for a newer slimline just about any chip will run backups. That's probably the feature 99% of people out there are interested in. If you want a specific feature - then you might look closer at a particular chip.
No clue on overall success rate. People who have a working mod don't have a reason to post. Mods I've done personally have almost always worked. When they don't, it's usually due to a faulty chip or a silly mistake on my part.
I buy mainly from www.mod-chip.com. Always had great customer service.
This guide is probably the best out there for how to install a chip. Even taught me a few things.
For your situation, I'd say remove the entire chip and all the wires. See if you can get your system to work normally. If so, have a pro install the chip.
