Hi all,

I have browsed the forums and searched, haven't come across quite the same problem I am having though, so I am hoping someone can shed some light on it for me.

I have a Pioneer A05, had it for about 3 weeks. I burned the 4x DVD-R that came with the unit (a Maxell piece) without a problem, so I ordered some Memorex blanks after enjoying success with them on the CD-R format. I have burned one movie which seems to play fine until about 10-12mins from the end where there is some visual distortion (pixellation, jerking etc) which does not impair viewing a great deal, although there is obviously a problem.

I also burn backup discs, and I made myself a 4.4gb collection of mp3 data, and burned away at 4x. The burn process seemed more akin to 2x (it took 30mins...) and upon completion I tried to acrhive the disc in my WhereIsIt catalog - only to discover the files toward the end of the data set (approx 3.9gb - to the end) did not read, and could not be accessed in any drive I have tried.

I have ordered the sample DVD-R pack from blankdiscshop to see if I get better results from any of those 7 supplied, and I am currently using firmware revision 1.33B ('hacked' to allow 2x burning on some 1x media) - although I have only just started with this particular one in an attempt to get better results from my Memorex's. I haven't burned ONE successfully yet, in about 8 attempts. The only one that works ok is one I tested with approx. 3.7gb of data and burned at 2x in Nero. The supplied Maxell DVD-RW I had is also fine, and i have re-written this a few times now, so I am pretty confident there isn't a problem with my A05 unit - it's just the Memorex media (supposedly good with A05 reading most sites such as blankdiscshop), perhaps I have a bad batch of them (25 spindle, says 4.7gb 1x-4x on the packaging).

Any thoughts/advice appreciated!

I have a pioneer A05 and have been using Memorex 4x dvd-rs and have had no problems. I have gone through a 50 pack and no probs. They burn 100% with no pixelation at the edges.

I have not changed the firmware and left it as is. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I believe some people were having problems with Memorex 4x media using the A06 as well.

Could be the firmware and not the media at all.

the ones I have been using state 4.7 gb/120 minute/4x in big letters.

I'm using record now max to burn, BTW.

Hi Tosca, thanks for your reply.

The Memorex discs seem to be the same, with 1-4x stated in big letters. I down-flashed my firmware to 1.21 last night and this morning tried to burn in RecordNow MAX at 4x, only using a test, and it starts off great as usual and the time is 15mins and decreasing, until the moment the software starts to count bytes on the progress bar and then the time adjusts to 29mins - back to 2x :(

I think I will see if any of this sample pack I have coming are any better, if not looks like this drive will be going back for a swap unfortunately.

Don't think new firmware will make much difference. 8ace: I've had the same problem with the 4x Memorex discs when I used DVDXCopy Express to backup. However I found that if I use DVD Shrink and include the 'analysis' option I avoid the problem of the freezing at the end of the movie. In actual fact this is really due to poor quality on the outer rim of the disc and the best way to overcome it is to get as best quality rip and burn as you can. I'm sure not all Memorex batches are the same but needless to say I will not be using Memorex discs again in future. Good luck.
