Polish with white toothpaste then wipe off. Don't rinse.

try using the ripper in anydvd or Intervideo DVDCopy 5 if either of thoses don't work you won't be able to back them up
sometimes i have problems with bad/scratch/dirty dvds and use a different drive(using my Plextor instead of my BenQ) to transcode and it works too! some drives read better
We shall go to the end,we shall fight in France,we shall fight on the seas and oceans,we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air,we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,we shall fight on the beaches,we shall fight on the landing grounds,we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,we shall fight in the hills;we shall never surrender

Historically, the Shrink forum has handled surface defect problems.
These are some general guidelines. I am big on buying used DVDs, CDs and vinyl. (Anything to save a buck).
Firstly, sonys have features that would tend to prevent backing up. Do they play on your reader? Are they at least 6 months out on the market. If you can answer yes to both. Clean off all the junk you put on the disk with Windex. None of that stuff helps. The disk should be free from smudges when held to the light. Try to find ripit4me and use that to make the copy. Sony sued them out of existance so it might not work for new releases. You probably have a scratch on a code key area. Rip4me makes a new code key and does not even use that part of the disk.
If you answer no to either question (you said some were new). Get a disk grinder. You can get them at Best Buy or Kmart for $20-30. They work as long as the scratch is not too deep. Tooth paste and other home remedies don't work hadrly at all. Any movie addict ought to have one in their bag of tricks. Especially if you buy used DVDs.
Next time you get a burner check the forums and get a better burner cheaper instead of the Sony junk (near worst for near most expensive). Some burners read through most scratches and tightens the beam making copys better than the scratched originals. Plexor is the best and costs the most by far. Lite-ons are cheap and might be #2 on in the runners ups, none are nearly as good as the Plexor. That is what the reviews say. I don't want to shell out the money for a Plexor. With a Lite-on I can take a disk unplayable on my midgrade player and produce a skip free disk. You can't beat $45 for a 30X dual layer burner!
You should process any video made from a scratched disk with fixvts (I think that is the name). They were also sued out of existance by Sony. Sony wants you to buy a new disk not fix your old one. Anything that might rejuvinate a bad disk will be on their sh@t list and will be sued.

Here are the best softwares to handle scratched discs:
#1 intervideo, you'll have to use it with anydvd or dvd43.
#2 1clickdvd copy(not the pro, don't not about it), again you'll have to use it with anydvd or dvd43.
#3 fabDecrypter(free), don't need a decrypter, it decrypts by itself and it is good with cratched discs.
I know that there are others, but i only have experience with these. 1clickdvd is my personal favorite when dealing with scratched discs.
PS: always clean the disc well, soap and warm water really help.
Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

@Mez,
FYI, the majority of latter Sony Drives are rebadged Lite-On drives, the 710 is actually a sohw-1653s, you can crossflash the Sony drive with the Lite-On firmware to make it into a Lite-On drive.
Drive Info
And Crossflash firmware here.
Latest firmware is version BSOY
Firmware page
I hope that this helps.
I have a DRU-800A which I have crossflashed into a SOHW-1693S drive, still works the same, seems to burn better DVD copies though.
As a possible helpful suggestion try cleaning the lens of your laser on the burner, either a shot of compressed air or use a Lens cleaner. (Never used a lens cleaner, just the compressed air)

blivetNC, that is interesting. I guess the Sony sohw-1653s are good drives. Still, you are probably paying for the label. I really hate to buy anything with a Sony label because they are such pigs. I do make an exception for their blank DVDs, if they are on sale.

Keep an eye out for sales and the like, but it seems cheaper to watch Newegg.com for their daily/weekend sales and offers of free shipping, you can find grreat drives on sale for less than $30.00 shipped.
