CamStudio MP3 Audio Encoding

I'm using CamStudio and love it. However as is typical of videos the volume level is eratic in my captures, so it was my plan to use VirtualDubMod and MP3Gain as described in various places to normalize the volume in my AVI files. The problem is, when I capture the audio from my speakers using CamStudio, it encodes it in Microsoft PCM Format rather than MPEG Layer-3 and I can't find anywhere to change that setting. When I record from my microphone CamStudio encodes to MP3 just fine as long as that's my setting, but that's not the sound I want. So from my understanding I can't normalize the volume unless it's MP3 and CamStudio won't encode using MP3 from the speakers...correct? My question, then: Is there a setting in CamStudio I'm missing to encode the audio stream in MP3 from the speakers? Is there some way to normalize the volume of several avi's without using MP3 encoded streams? and last, would it just be easier to jump my audio-output wire to my microphone-in on my sound card and record the microphone audio anyway since that encodes correctly?
