A buddy recently gave me his PS2 to look at because it will play movies but not games. Anyone know what might be happening here? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

You might need to open up the ps2 and readjust the laser height.

What happens when you put in a game? Does it say disc read error?

When I start any other playstation regardless of movies or games I at least get the opening browser but when I start a movie or game on this system it does nothing. After about 20secs or so if it is a movie it will start playing. A game does nothing alltogether.

so you insert ps2 game, you go and load the disc , and no error comes up?

nothing whatsoever, I think at this point I should just open it up and look for anything obvious. Who knows, it may have a poorly installed modchip in it or something.

some modchips have different modes for playing PS1 games and movies then they do PS2 DVD based games, you may also want to look into that.
