whats goin on guys im planning on getting a new computer and basic ly i no what i want except when it comes to burning backs for ps2 and dvd writers now i want to know all my options the usual price this stuff would cost .... this would help alot thanks Feehan

Go for a Pioneer 106 DVD burner. It's the most reliable around and you should get it for around £100 (about $160). You can use DVD + or - discs with it. Also it's useful to have a seperate DVD ~Rom drive so you can more quickly and easily rip the movies before burning.

In addition to the burner and large (100gig) fast harddrive and a minimum of 512MB of ram is a good idea. The faster the processor the faster deycripter programs and the like will work.

I have 120Gb IBM, 3/4Gb ram and 1700xp, works fine but would like a faster chip :O)

larger RAM will not make any difference - 256mb is quite sufficient.

I would disagree, Discmania. I've dropped my PC to 256 from 512 to see if it would make a difference. I found DVD2One took about 5 minutes longer with 256 as opposed to 512 to decrypt the exact same movie file.

The one thing I would recommend to feehan is not to cheap out on the CPU; make sure you get a Pentium instead of a Celeron if you are going with Intel. I'm personally not a fan of AMD so I can't tell you how well it works for DVD backups.

I agree that the more ram you have the better. I would definately go with the DVR-106, and a large hard drive (two would be better if you are using a backup that requires ripping the dvd to the harddrive). As far as AMD Vs. Intel, my opinion is that AMD is at least as good as Intel and is cheaper (I think they are a little better).

If it takes longer to decrypt at 256mb of RAM maybe you have other progs working at the same time? AMD Athlon is the pro choice for processor but Intel Pentium is also good.

I think this is a perfect topic for a newbie, a dvd-r will not run on its own. a lot of slow running and burning problems are due to the machine spec not just the writer.

I am not an addict so may be wrong!!!
