If the problem is in the audio and not a setting in the player, then one way is to extract the audio from the AVI with VirtualDub and run it through the likes of Audacity.
The WAV file can be equalized and saved as a new WAV file.
VirtualDub then loads and saves the new WAV with the original video.
Load the original AVI file into VirtualDub and check the audio file information.
The information will be used for the settings on the new WAV file.
Click 'File' > ' Save WAV'
Run Audacity and drag/load the WAV.
Edit> Select All.
Effect > Equalization
Export the new WAV.
VirtualDub, click 'Audio' > 'No Sound', then 'WAV Audio' and load the new WAV file.
Select 'Full processing mode' and choose 'Compression', LameMP3 and choose the settings matching the original.
Example 44100,128, stereo.
Click 'Video' and 'Direct Stream Copy'
Save the new AVI file.
I'm having a simular problem. I downloaded a movie and when I play it back you can't hear the dialog. The music and sound effects are fine. I've played the file in media player, VCL and power dvd. No dialog. help!
With VLC you tried 'Audio Device' setting?
Perhaps your DVD player has some kind of audio equalization?
You could demux the audio and use Audacity to equalize it or if you were lucky it would be in the left or right channel and it could be boosted.
Any more it seems that if the main audio isn't dead centre it causes problems when these movies are compressed to AVI.
You'll note that the original poster didn't respond, which doesn't help.
