Dvd shrink keeps telling me to put in a blank DVD. I've tried half a spindle and it keeps saying that. It's a new spindle, so they are all blank and new. Why does it keep saying this?

Sounds like your drive isn't recognizing the media you're using.
Which are you using - like Sony +R 16x?
What's the make and model of the drive? Firmware up to date?

I've ran into this once or twice, just try leaving it in for a while and see what happens. Mine eventually recognized the disc. Usually happened with imatation discs.

This is why most of us are selective as to what we buy. It might be your firmware but it is far more likely you have bargain disks. I don't think there has been any new media types on the market in over a year. Unless you are using 32X media, the chances are slim that you have a new type of media. Even the good brands are getting worse the cheap brands have hit new lows. I have found even if my burner can read and burn the players can't read it. Everyone is trying to use less dye in their disks.
Try to return them and buy Sony or better yet Verbatum. I use the crappy blanks I can't return as data disks if my burner can read read and burn to them. I have found my year old Memorex blanks are showing age. I am seeing visual defects in the ones that are not usable as data disks. What I am saying is even if they are use-able they may age out quickly.

I'm using Maxell DVD-R 16x
I've used this brand alot in the past. Everything seemed to work fine. I recently had bought a few more spindles, and none of the DVD's seemed to work. I tried in both of my PC's, several DVD's out of both spindles.

Maxell uses different manufacturers so you can get a different one with each spindle and they may not be compatible w/ your drive.
The 16x speed may not do well on the HP300n - older drive and the last firmware update was from 1/04. The latest is 3.00
The NEC in the laptop though has newer updates - here's a link.
If the NEC is not up to date update it - you'll need to figure out which one to use. Like if this is a dell laptop the latest is 203E.

Maxell is not the worst brand by far but it isn't a great brand. Try Verbatum or Sony I don't even use Fugi any more. Making coasters is a waist of time. Wait for them to go on sale then buy a few month worth. That will keep you going until they go on sale again.

Your getting an illegal disc error which usually means the media isn't supported by the firmware. The Maxells you're using are made by Ritek - not bad but looking like not compatible w/ your drive.
Follow Mez advice and try different media like Verbatim or Sony. Taiyo Yuden is another great one. You can get them online from a reputable online store or instore made in Japan only Sony or Fuji - usually the 8x & under if you can find them.
