It's been asked before, but it's too late :P
Err. STAY AWAY FROM MODCHIPS. They're an easy way for you to get banned from XBL. I wouldn't rcommend getting it modded if you use XBL, until you look into some of the different types of drives and stuff. If you do get it modded, and if you have a compatible drive then get ixtreme. Get the latest version for your drive so you'll have extra protection on XBL. And stealth patch ALL of your games before you play them. There's a stickied tutorial at the top on how to stealth, but i think it's alittle out dated. Check 360patches (dot) com to learn how to start patching. And type in that site on google and look at the fourth result if you need more help.
Hope this helps!

definitely look into a firmware flash. modchips suck so bad. if you buy a 360, i wouldn't reccomend getting an Elite, due to it's so far unflashable dvd drive. if you want the extra memory, get the normal 360 and buy the hard drive seperate. the HD output on the elite isn't any diff in quality (unless you have a super expensive tv) so don't worry about that

ok, well you need everything The Grunt listed, plus you need to find your drive make and model that way you can find the correct firmware (if you post the drive info here, we can tell you which firmware you should use)

nope, depending on your firmware, you should be able to play all origional xbox and xbox 360 games (provided that the xbox game has a patch out) and all supported backups (which you'll find once you start lookin for the FW you need)
