For the past few months I've been ripping music videos from my "store bought" DVD's to my video ipod & have had no problems until now. The DVD is "The Best Of The Moody Blues, 20th Century Masters - The DVD Collection (The 5 video DVD). The ripping process goes through smoothly but when I play the ripped video the picture is fine but the audio is white noise. How do I get the music tracks? Thank you.
You really ought to post this query somewhere else. You may be lucky and Shrink just used the wrong default sound track but still copied it correctly. Try listening to all your audio channels. Some times bad choices are made when you let the software make all your choices.
If that doesn't work the solution is well beyond the scope of this forum. That does not mean you will not get an answer here. Shrink does not allow you to pick a default audeo track. If the sound track is in some other format you will need to find someone that knows something about that format.

We are not talking about encoding with Shrink, but rather the ripping of the original DVD. What software did you use to rip the DVD? It could be a number of different things that are causing the problem. The DVD could have a bad press, but that is normally the last thing that I worry about. After you ripped the disk did you try to play it on your computer before you burned the disk? Was the DVD clean?

??? Don't throw the discussion away just yet! There are a lot of people on this forum that are very knowledgeable in different solutions to common problems that people face.
I'm sorry. I forgot that I used DVD Decrypter to rip the entire DVD to a folder, then I used DVD Shrink to open the files & re-rip the videos individually. Lastly I use Videora to convert the files to the iPod video format.

DVD Decrypter is a fantastic program that never gets updated. The same holds true for DVD Shrink, however, Shrink may still be used as long as the DVD is ripped properly first. Download DVDFab HD Decrypter from here: http://dvdfab.com/free.htm
This is a free version of their premium version. Whenever there is an update go back to this site to download the free version again. Maybe that will correct your problem.
After skipping the Moody Blues DVD (for now) I ripped some videos from more DVD's (successfully). Unfortunately, when I tried to do it with a Toby Keith DVD it gave me the same problem with "white noise" audio. It also happened to be a "20th. Century Masters" DVD as well. When I rip the DVD to the hard drive, I use DVD Decrypter to create an ISO image. Next I open the ISO image with DVD Shrink & rip the VOB music video files to the hard drive. A strange thing I want to point out is that when I play the VOB files in the DVD Shring viewer I get full video & audio playback. When I convert the VOB files to MPEG-4 for my ipod, that is where I get "white noise" for the audio.
I am not an expert but I suspect your converter 'expects' the audio to be a certain way. Being maybe HiFi it may not be in the right format for the converter to find it. Your audio is there but is different than your converter expects. If I remember correctly, Ripit4me allows you to set a sound track as a default. You could also try making a disk first then re-rip it and the audio track might be in the right format because Shrink may figure out where the audio is and set it as a default for compatibility.
Get a copy of GSpot and drop one of the .VOB files from the original disk on it. This will let you know what type of audio is on the original. Then RTFM for your converter program and see if the source audio is compatible with that program. If not, two options I see are use a better converter or fix the source audio.
My main ripper is the paid for version of what you are using, DeFab Platnum. It shows all the audio streams and their type in main movie mode. It also converts movies for different mobile devices. You might want to try the 30 day trial to see if it will convert your videos correctly. It is a real nice tool. I still use it the same way that you do although 'it is not necessary'. FixVTS is more relyable than their built in fixer and I over compress my videos in shrink by 5%. This leaves a tiny ring of unburned media at the edge. It is easier to tell if the disk has burned and the movie 'keeps' better because edges often get damaged over time. I have not bothered to check if I can set DeFab to over compress because I use FixVTS. Because the VOBs are 4.5 G the FixVTS and the shrinking take about half the time because the files are half the size.
