Hi all,

I'm not sure this is the right board for this but I couldn't find a better place with as active a user group, please any help would be great.

I've had this Slim PSTWO SCHP-70012 for over 2.5 years now and it's always worked flawlessly, it was my main DVD player as well.

Well all of a sudden a couple days ago it will not read ANY disc now. At first I thought it was not spinning the discs as I seem to remember it being louder when it does so and seem to recall that upon openning it it was still spinning. I know it has a brake but I recall seeing it moving and stop pretty quickly (instead of being totally stopped when I open it like now). I know it's moving though because the disk is in another position.

I've tried cleaning the lens but beyond that I've found no other guide on the PSTWO. Strangely enough I do NOT get the "Disc Read Error". Upon starting the PS2 with a disc, it will think for 10-20 secs and then dump me to the browser (or rather the openning screen before that). If I go into the browser it will sense a disc and try to read it, saying "Reading disc...", BUT it will never leave this screen. I have left it like this for 30 mins and it never tells me disc read error, just stays on that reading screen.

Even more strangly (which I think is the best clue) is that I cannot turn the unit off. If I hold power for 5 secs (to turn off instead of reboot) and let go, nothing happens. Then if I open the disc tray it will turn off the unit when the tray opens. I can wait as long as I want before pressing the open button, but as long as I tried to turn it off before hand, it will shut the unit off when the tray is openned.

Can anyone with more PS2 hardware experience make a suggestion? I don't think it's my lens, I'm thinking it's the drive motor, are there any tests I can do with a multimeter to check what's going on? Is it worth just calling Sony or will they charge and exhorbitant amount to fix it? I'm an engineer so I'd prefer to play and make this work myself but I'm quite at a loss and just want to play my games.

Thanks for all your help!

Reading a link below this I wanted to add that I've tried a number of my PS2 games and DVD movies and nothing works. I hear the motor engage and spin (like I'm used to hearing), but it's not still spinning when I open it later.

Just now for completeness I decided to try an Audio CD and that worked fine!! So... now I'm thinking maybe it is just the laser and it needs an adjustment/alignment? I don't have any PSX games to try, but now I'm thinking it's maybe initializing the disc and seeing it's DVD and stopping it (so it's stopped when I open but HAS moved).

Also, if I press the power button quickly (as if to reset) it will reset, it's just trying to turn it off that will not occur until the tray is openned.

Thanks in advance.

ok depending on how off your voltage is for your laser depends on if the disc will start to spin while i was adjusting mine i got if so far off the disc didn't even spin and there are two seperate adjustments one for cd and one for dvd it appears your cd one is fine you need to take laser off turn it upside down locate the two screws if u look they should say which one they are for, get a marker mark the screw at the 12 oclock postion and adjust the screw in very very little increments put it back test game and movie.. keep it up till works good luck

Ok, one pot was at 330ohms and the other (I think the one labeled DVD (unsure since DVD was basically just written between the two pots and CD wasn't written anywhere) was at 799.

I first tried 799->700 and CDs still works but DVDs no. Then I tried 600 and nothing worked, didn't even try to load just stuck with 'No Data.'. Then tried 900 (since one guide I was looking at said not to go below 600) and still nothing. Set it back to 800 and still nothing, not even the CDs.

So did I fry my laser I guess? Is there a way to test it (ohms across the laser itself or anything?)? Does the 'CD' one being set to 330 making any sense? The only guides I found pertained to the first 7 models and they have CD and DVD both tpically set between 800-1200. I just figured I'd only start changing that one once I'd tried a lot of range on the 'DVD' one to no affect.

im sorry i don't use a volt-ohm meter i just adjust the screw adn then check, but the adjustments are bout 1/64th of an inch at a time very very small, if you have the laser upside down and the screws facing you the one for cd will be on your left and the dvd one will be on the right

click this to see a pic of what it should look like
