Matrix Infinity 1.54 Firmware Update Problem

Ok. So I have a Matrix Infinity 1.54 chip in my ps2. and i recently went to do the old firmware update downloaded 1.91 burned it to cd and popped it in. everything loaded fine it told me to press start to do the update and so i did. then it tells me that the update failed. didn't give any reason. just says "update failed. press any button" so i thought maybe i would try a lower upgrade first. so i tried 1.85 same results. i tried 1.68 same thing again. now i've read around and the closest problems i've seen is with imitation chips. but i mean, the screen shows up and tells me it's the infinity 1.54. obviously anyone could have programmed their chip to lie. and since i have no idea where the chip actually is and i don't feel like ruining my ps2 i can't open it up to see if it's a fake or not. so if we were to assume that it's NOT a fake, what could be the possible causes of this problem? any help would be greatly appreciated. even if you just want to mock me, that's cool too. thanks.
