Hi, I know this is probably an annoying n00b question, but I have to ask somewhere. I am actually a modder for the wii, but that is really the only system I have ever bothered with. I have always wanted to mod my PS2, but it is really old and in bad shape, so I don't have much faith in the laser (I actually took it to Iraq with me and it is still full of dirt 5 years later).

Anyway, I just bought a slim PS2 off of ebay so I can mod that instead. I of course do not know what version it is yet or anything, but I assumed the slim ones should all have decent lasers. I do see now that the version 12 needs some laser fix, I'll cross my fingers I don't have that and worry about it later if I do. But for now I need a mod chip, but I have NO idea what to get. All I really care about are backup games, so I don't need anything fancy, and I have no concern soldering anything out there, so I don't need anything special in that department either.

Basically, I just want something cheap that can play backups, and it needs to work on slim models. I have heard great things about the crystal chips, but it seems like it has a bunch of stuff that I won't use. I suppose it's possible that I may get into it when I mess with the chip some, but right now it seems like $45 is a bit unnecessary for a mod chip. I am used to the wiis drive chips which are basically all the same and have no special features, so this is all really confusing to me.

Sorry if this is one of those things that gets asked a million time, because I am sure it is. But everyone is looking for something different in a mod, and I just want to make sure I get the right thing for me. Any help anyone can give would very much be appreciated. Thanks a lot!!

They repair, mod, and sell premodded PS2s. They also have installation diagrams.

They have installation manuals and you can buy modchips there. You can also find your PS2 version there.

More guides.

The best basic chip i know is the Duo3. Get it.

if all you ever plan to do is play back up games then the Duo3 chip will be what you want. Most of the other features like hard drive support or in game reset that the Crystal Chip would have will do you no good since you have the slimline. (unless it is a V12 or V13 and you feel like spending quite a bit more on mods to be able to use an internal hard drive.)

And you DO want to have them install a laser fix with the chip on any V12, you can use this guide to find the version:

Excellent, thanks a lot for the replys. The duo 3 is exactly what I was looking at after some browsing around last night. I see it's only $13 on foundmy, so it's good to get some verification that it is what I am looking for.

The diagrams will be really helpful too, since I won't have to search around everywhere trying to find them now. I guess I'll order the chip and sit back and wait to see if I have a version 12 or not. Looks like the laser fix is cheap anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter much either way.

Thanks again, you guys covered all the questions I had. Appreciate it

yeah, i have a duoX2 chip in my Xbox and it has done me proud. It was cheap and has done all i have needed it to do.

The chart above will tell you what version you have, just look at the silver sticker on the PSTwo and get the number that looks like the one in the guide. That way you can order the modchip and laser fix both at the same time if you need one.
