I'm new to the world of backing up DVDs and have been successful in making some regular DVD5 backups, but I was wondering with the larger DVD9 movies if it is possible to backup the whole DVD onto a Dual-Layered DVD so that you don't have to compress the movie as much? would they still be compatible with most DVD players?

Backing up a movie to a DL disc means you won't have to change any compression at all--the DL disc can be identical to the DVD9movie. The DL disc will be compatible with most new players. Older players may stumble or freeze at the transition layer when the laser changes focus from the outer layer to the inner layer; but if you can alter the bit setting on the DL discs to call them "DVD-ROM" discs, the chances of freezing may end up being just a momentary lag in program. Newer DL drives are getting much better at recording DVD+R DL media. DVD-R DL still remain a difficulty for many drives.
