I have a modded Hitachi 78 drive with the new ixtreme firware v 1.2 rev 1 everything worked fine until a couple of days later. First it started making all kind of crazy noises now no matter what disc I put in it Original game, backups, movies I get an unplayable disc error@ the dashboard. I tried reflash back to the original state as the drive needs an original game or movie to do so and wont read any discs but it shows up in windows.

I thinking about sending it to M$ under warranty. My ? is can they tell if the system has modded firmware? Or should I just go ahead just bite the warranty bullet and just get another drive?

You should flash it back with the original firmware, but if its not reading any disk, then I suppose its not posible, depending on which method you are going to use to flash it back. If you cant flash it back to its original firmware, get another drive, who knows what MS might do.

In that case, before you go out to get yourself another drive, you might want to tweak it and see if it makes any difference.
