Can't boot Compaq

I have a Compaq desktop from 2000. It has crashed before and I have reloaded XP on it and it worked fine for years, and now it has decided to crash again. When I turn it on, it boots and displays a black screen with a red "Compaq" logo and a white flashing cursor in the top right. I have tried every "F" button on the keyboard and I can't seem to get into the BIOS. So I put the XP CD in the drive and it sounds like its doing something, but nothing happens. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
