How to play x264 MKV video?

Is there any way we can play HD x264.MKV video files ?

So far playing them via VLC on PS3 gives lagging since I think there is not enough ram ?

Any way to play these ?

I run Linux on PC and if you will tell me that I need to change the video container, let me know how.
