Im in the market for a PlayStation 2 (not 3). I want to take several of my .ISO images and copy them to a 3.5" USB external 40GB IDE drive then play them on the new PS2 unit.

From my surfing I am going to require a new PS2 unit (Future Shop here in Canada has them for $139), a USB2.0 3.5" external enclosure with 40GB IDE HDD within it. Then i also need Winhiip (http://www.psxforum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22748) to format the external drive and copy the ISO images to the unit. Attahc the USB drive to the slim PS2 unit.

I then need to purchase USBeXtreme software ( http://www.hdadvance.com/) and load this disc in the PS2. It will automatically recognize the PS2 external drive and show the game installed on it. I can then RUN the game. No hardware modchip required.

Is this all correct?

Its been a while since i was using a usb hard drive for the ps2 but i'll try to give what i can.

Firstly the usb hard drive needs to be formatted by NTFS file system.

Then it needs formatting via usbextreme software via the pc.

Now to install games to the usb hard drive you use the same usbextreme software by inserting the ps2 game into into your computers dvd drive.

Once you have put the game/games onto it then you connect it via the usb port of the ps2. Run the usbextreme disk in the ps2 and once loaded you should see the games on screen and be able to run them.

Just to note that not all games work with the usb hard drive so you could get a problem with a few.

PD 3.8ghz (OC) Duo, Air Duct tubed Antec p182, 2gb ddr2 800mhz,Adaptec 29320A-R U320, 2 x 72gb 15k scsi hdds, 150gb 10k sata Wd Raptor, 2 x LG Supermulti dvdrw, Tagan TG700-U35 700w, Realtek HD Audio, Nvidia 8600gts (OC) 760/2350mhz Limited Edition HDMI. Yuraku 19" TS.

yeah, you pretty much have down what is needed. I have never used USB Xtreme myself but any good hard drive program should be able to format the drive. The drawback is the USB Xtreme doesn't have very good game compatibility. So there is no telling which of your games will actually work. That and they are sooooo much slower then an internal drive would have been on the older fat PS2 models.

So if you could get an older fat model with a network adapter, HD Advanced 3.0, and your Winhiip program you would have better game compatibility and faster loading times then either USB or a disc.
