PS2 error with booting or mod chip

Hi, I have a older PS2, version 5/6 with an installed DMS3 mod chip. The chip has been in for a couple of years and the system has worked great throughout that time. A few months ago though, games started to boot less and less on the first try, and now it has gotten to the point where they sometimes won't boot at all. I don't get a disc read error, but rather a "please insert a Playstation 2 disc" error with the red screen or in some occassions a "no data" screen. This happens with both backups and original games. Basically I was just wondering if there could be a problem with my mod chip, or do i just need a new laser? Thanks
