Ive become very frustrated trying to get an answer. My wife and I have a large dvd collection. I want to know if I can copy our movies onto a blank disc? Are these protected somehow? How can I get around the block? Which software should I buy to do this?

Sorry it was more than one question.

Please give me a simple answer. I dont know much about DVDr or dvdws or dvdr-w or any of that suff.

Gary

For a free method of backing up commercial DVD's which WILL BE copy protected, here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154 DVDFab Decrypter was replaced by DVDFab HD Decrypter. The best paid method is AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, both by Slysoft, which have trials but whichever way you go, the quality hit will be neglible or less observeable if you just back up the main movie unless a Dual Layer DVD is used. Some guides here but forget DVD Decrypter (not DVDFab HD Decrypter) and Ripit4Me; no longer updated: http://webpages.charter.net/bacitup/Guides.htm

I guess I was hoping for step by step instructions on how to go about copying a DVD. You have spoken over my head. My new laptop has a dvd burner in it, thats all I know.

I can understand if you cant take the time to explain this more clearly to someone who is completly uneducated in this process.
Thanks so much,

Gary

Those links I gave do provide step by step instructions and, while I don't mind providing instructions, are far better than any info I could provide. That said, AnyDVD which runs in the background to break any encryption on DVD's and CloneDVD2 are all I've ever used, easy to use, update amost too much and for it's lifetime and is, I consider, the best way to go.
