Why burn at less than rated DVD speed?

I was reading a thread on VOBBlanker and someone responded with a comment that caught my eye. He stated that you should burn your DVD at no more than 1/2 the DVD rated speed. Why is this?

Fewer errors if the burner/media are not perfectly suited for each other.
