It looks like Toshiba won't be out classed by the competition!

From High-def digest:
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/T...ers_For_Oct/837

I hope all the new players have 8 channel outs and HDMI 1.3 with bit-stream bypass.

Not yet. I really hope they put a Reon-VX into the 30 and a Realta in the 35. They need a Realta processor in thier line up in order to stay competitive with the new 3rd gen Samsung players.

Onkyo just stepped up to the plate to challenge Denon for the high-end high-def consumer base...

Features listed:

- 1080p/24 (over HDMI)

- HDMI 1.3a with Deep-Color and Advanced audio pass through enabled

- Silicon Optix's HQV Reon-VX with upscaling to 1080p for SD-DVD enabled

Pricing:

DV-HD805 - $899

Onkyo announces their first HD DVD player:

For 900 bucks I was hoping for a Realta instead of a Reon but the player looks like a first-class first attempt still.

With bitstream transmission enabled these should go very well with Onkyo's new HDMI 1.3 advanced audio decoding receivers.

I'm also interested to see if they'll incorporate any HQV chips in the gen 3 Toshibas.

Keep us posted Ced.

Photos of the new players from toshiba:

From the logos on the new units our fellow HD geeks over at AVS have begun talk of ABT processors using their VARs technology and more technically the ABT1018 processor. Nothing has been officially announced yet.

ABT1018

The folks over at AVS are touting the ABT solutions as better than the HQV chips. What do y'all think?

Anchor Bay is well regarded for the DVDO iScan line of external processors so these chips should be worthy of a close look. You can be sure there will be HQV versus VAR showdowns when these players come out.

A new company has just announced pricing for a new budget HD DVD player by Canadian company Venturer Electronics. This player represents the first next gen HD player to reach the magic $200 price mark and should be out just in time for the holidays.

The HD-A30 units have arrived to my store. Didn't get a chance to test it out. Will do so soon. A plus though is that it comes with two free movies in the box (including 300 and Bourne Identity).

Saw the HD-A30 in action today and can confirm that this unit is a large step up from the HD-A20 and HD-A3. The picture after ABT processing is arresting. I'm glad Toshiba went name brand instead of using another in house processor design.

Thanks for the info Ced. Can you compare the ABT/VAR post-processing to the XA2's Reon VX?

Sadly, I can't. I have never had the chance to see an HD-XA2 in action. Nor have a tested its DVD up-conversion features yet. But I can say the HD-A30 mates well with the new Pioneer Kuro sets with their 3:3 (72 Hz / 24 Hz times 3) processing. And unlike the HD-XA2 there are no audio sync problems when in 1080p/24Hz mode.

Truthfully though the HD-A35 would be the comparable model to the XA2.

So here is an article about the CH-DVD (China High Definition Digital Versatile Disc | Formally the Enhanced Versatile Disc) format. I felt this article is relevant as it sheds some light on the current successes of the HD DVD format. In any case it is an interesting development that impacts 3rd gen HD DVD technology and pricing (maybe even content)...
