I am trying to use DVD Shrink to backup a movie to a DVD+R DL disc. The capacity of the DVD+R DL is 8.5 GB so I have DVD Shrink set to no compressionthe disc size to DVD-9. When Nero (version 6) launches to burn the backup copy I get a dialog "Checking Discs" and then am told: Sorry, your compilation cannot be written on this kind of disc. Please insert a disc of the correct type or modify the settings of your compilation to make them compatible with the current disc. Media requested: DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW Media detected in drive: CD-R (which is not true.. it is DVD+R DL) I thought it was because I had previously just been using DVD-R 4.7gb and maybe it didn't realize I had swithced to +R (though my dvd burner will do both.) BUT, I tried some new DVD+R 4.7 gb and they are burning fine. It appears to be just the DL that it is not recognizing as a DVD, it thinks it is a cd.
Nero has no upgrades or support for version 6 anymore. I tried version 7 but couldn't get it to work right with Vista. Any suggestions? I tried 3 different disks in the pack in case it was just defective, but same problem for all of them.
I tried using whatever Windows Vista comes with the burn the encoded files that DVDShrink said was ready for burning, but it won't play on my DVD player. Plays on the computer, but not the DVD player.

I am technology impaired, maybe my computer just can't burn this type?

Optical Drive Double-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW drive
Optical Drive Speeds 2.4x DVD+R DL; 2x DVD-R DL; 8x8x8 DVD+RW; 8x6x8 DVD-RW; 24x16x24 CD-RW

does that mean anything?

Hi zoeboemom
What's th make, model and firmware version of the dvd drive?
I thinking based on the specs it's a bit older and if the firmware is up to date might be part of the problem.

To find this info go to Nero SmartStart then ToolKit>InfoTool.
The make and model will be listed in the dropdown and in the drive tab there will be a field there for the firmware version.

The other thing is since you're running Vista - Nero 6 isn't Vista compatible - may be another part of the problem.
Nero 7.5.9.0 and higher are Vista compatible and version 7.7.5.1 are Vista certified.

DVD players can be picky with media media esp. dual layer. The best dual layer media to use would be Verbatim.
Once you post back the make and model of the drive we can see if it can booktype. Booktyping a +R disc to DVD-Rom would increase the compatability.

Hi zoeboemom

I'm not sure there is a patch for Nero 7.0, but if you go to Nero and get the patch for Nero 7.xx Ultra for Vista that would help. Then it should work with DVD Shrink. I don't have Vista but my tech friend was installing Nero on a laptop with Vista and that's what he had to do. Jack

For some reason Nero lists Vista funky - the logs will usually show XP 6.0. But if your running Nero 6 that might be any reason it doesn't show correctly since Vista isn't supported in Nero 6.

Is this a laptop that came w/ Vista? I'm thinking it's either an Acer or Gateway (though could be wrong) so the only way to get a firmware update on the drive is if the laptop manufacturer has one.
This drive doesn't support booktyping so strike that option.

Try burning w/ ImgBurn instead of Nero or the windows app. Here's a tweak for Shrink (link) that will let you pick this choice to autoburn w/ ImgBurn. Under select backup target pick 'iso image file and burn w/ ImgBurn.
The tweak for Shrink also has instructions - you just bascially save the .exe to dvd shrink folder in program files.

What the make and model of the dvd player? You can check it at videohelp to make sure it supports +R DL media.

awesome! I will try the ImgBurn and the tweak for shrink. I really don;t want nero 7, it was a PIA. It is a Gateway and it did come with Vista (you are really good!) You know, my DVD probably doesn't recognize the +R DL, the thing is OLD!!! I'll let you know how it goes and thank you soooooooooooooo much!!

Not a problem zoeboemom
Too bad the burner doesn't booktype - booktyping the disc to dvd-rom might have worked for the dvd player.

Your best bet might be just to buy a new dvd player - really pretty cheap now - heck cheaper then the dual layer discs :)

we've been meaning to get a new one for awhile but everytime we go to look, we just get intimidated by all of the different ones. not to mention I rarely buy anything these days without it being on SlickDeals! Any recommendations? we'd rather pay a little more for something nice that won't be outdated in 5 minutes but don't want top of the line or anything. all we watch on the DVD player is kids movies these days anyway!

yeah there are tons of them out there!
I have a few Sony's that are a couple of years old and they play anything I throw at them unlike the much older Mintek.

A few members here and some of my friends have Philips dvd players and love them.

If you find one that you like click on that videohelp link above and type in the make and model. It will give you all the formats and stuff that the player supports. May even have some buyer comments for what they're worth.

ok, I did both but when the DVD started to burn, I got an error message :'Optimal L1 Data Zone Start LBA: None Found! (VTS_01)' and it went on and on. It asked me if I wanted to burn anyway and I thought that the hell, so I clicked yes. Not sure what's going to happen. Our DVD player is a Sony but it is 8 years old. has played all of the dvd-r's so far.

The Sony you have more than likely doesn't support +R/-R DL media so time for an upgrade.

Now the error you're getting has something to do with the layer break. It might not play but not sure. Try playing it in the pc.

ImgBurn is almost all I use for burning dual layer and haven't run across this problem yet. Which movie gave you this problem?

it's Lost season 1 disk 1. I also have a JVC that is only 3 or so years old but it's a hunk of junk. It's in the bedroom where we watch 2 movies a year, if that. it's 90% burns, so we'll see how it goes in a minute. if it's my dvd player just not playing them, then maybe if this doesn't work with imgburn, I can use whatever the heck it is windows used to burn the other disk, it'll just take longer.

Wow! Glad ImgBurn came through.
I'm thinking since these are series discs that might be why ImgBurn gave the layer break warning bit but I'm not 100% sure.
I still burn series disc to single layer and save the dual layer for the movies I really like :)

The Philips players Binkie mentioned will play just about anything round, excluding pepperoni of course. MP3, CD video, and DVD formats are all covered. They're cheap and Wally World usually carries the brand. For an inexpensive player that covers most, if not all, the needed formats it's hard to beat.

If working with DL, moving away from Nero 6 was a good idea. DL came out about when Nero 7 came along. The last versions of 6 never seemed to work properly with DL. I went with Nero 7 and haven't looked back. It's a good burning suite in my estimation. The way it sells, there's a lot of others thinking the same. It's a bit bulky, but I don't worry about program sizes when the files I'm working with are usually about 7GB being compressed to 4.37GB (actually less).

For most DL burning though, I use the ImgBurn that Binkie suggested. I'm with Binkie as well on saving the DLs for favorites and transcoding to DVD5 for the run of the mill jobs. The Shrink does a good job when you turn on the Quality Settings. So no need to buy expensive software.

Another free program is Rebuilder. A bit more advanced, but not much. It uses supported encoders and encodes the video. I use the retail version of Rebuilder with CCE and I've yet to run into a DVD that I couldn't encode the full disc and it not play well on my 60" TV. Rebuilder is best used on faster PCs and usually desktops. Hanks Encoder is a good freeware program and comes with the free Rebuilder. So, once again, no need to buy software to check the program out.

I was mostly applauding the good suggestions Binkie made. She knows her stuff. The ImgBurn got you off and running. It just sounded as though you might want to improve your skills at transcoding to DVD5. With Shrink that is using the right settings. RB/Hanks is hard to beat for an encoder setup. But, you pay for the extra quality with an encoder in time. I've got a fast PC and it takes well over an hour to do a backup with RB.

well thank you both very much. I was worried about the quality of shrinking so much, to burn the full disk I was shrinking down to 60%, even after I took out the CC and languages I didn't need, etc. Do you think that is still okay quality at 60%?

Thanks again!

If it's one I don't really care about I'll go that high on compression but I usually keep it 70% or higher (meaning 30% or less compression).

Depends on what you play it on too - small sets you may not notice a diff but larger screens and hi def you will.

I don't know how your PC will work with the Rebuilder software. As I said before, it is best for higher compression tasks. At 20 percent those with encoder software go to it. 30% with a transcoder is pushing the limit for good quality video on large screen TVs. If you're using Shrink for higher compression, you need to turn on the Quality Settings in the Backup window. Viewing video is something of personal preference. So, you need to see what works for you. Since DVD5s are inexpensive, it doesn't hurt to test things a bit. See how far you can go with Shirnk before it causes problems for you.

My problem seems similar but I have gotten to this point: The DVD has been decrypted and is on the hard drive. No matter what i do, I cannot burn it to a blank DVD disc that is readable by my stand-alone DVD player. When I insert it, I get the message that it has not been formatted properly. of course, if I format it as directed, all content is lost (I am using DVD-RW). There must be an answer but I can't imagine what it is. It is playable on the computer if I select "Play with VLC Player" but not with any other of the players, such as RealPlayer or Windows Media Player and it will not play spontaneously until I select VLC.

Any idea where that thread is? I wanted to tell him that a lot of Standalone players won't play the RW format. Usually only the newer multi format players will do so.

No idea where yashmakkk will start their new thread but the dvdr for newbie section might be best. This doesn't look like a shrink problem from the post though I could be wrong. The other problem is only vlc will play this rip so something is wrong there - real media and wmp to play it too.
