Mod Chip Warning
After you update and go back to the update section to before a "test update" you will be greeted with a message that says something to effect that if you have a modified Wii your console may be disabled or lock up. Mod Chippers owned? If you want to cancel you have to power down your system.
===========
I dont have a modified wii, but is this true?

YIKES! I was in the middle of this update and I read this post, I QUICKLY ran and unplugged the wii before the bar finished.
However, to my terror, when I check my firmware version, it does say v 3.0U!!!!! WHAAAT???
However, I can still play my backed up games OK, and everything else seems to be fine. The only notable change is a clock on the wii menu. But I never saw any message saying that a modified wii may be disabled...
I have a wiikey. Any more info would be greatly appreciated. What a bummer it would be if this was to brick wii systems, since doing updates via the menu was supposed to be the way to AVOID bricking your wii! wow....

Ive read other boards and apparently it appears to be just a "scare tactic". Everyone says it works, but I cant confirm because I dont have one.
From another board:
the update WILL NOT brick your console. Doesn't matter what mod you have. For god sakes it's a dvd drive mod!! The Wii motherboard isn't even touched.
Nintendo does have a warning about your system becoming inoperable... this warning comes up AFTER you have already upgraded when you click the upgrade button again. I would say this is only a precautionary measure on Nintendo's part to keep them from being liable for anything that happens on moded Wii's.

you are EXTREMELY LUCKY. Never ever ever interrupt a flash. Ususally that's a sure fire way to a brick. Then again, since this most likely isn't programming an eeprom, where you must erase before program, that risk is probably smaller, although still a very bad idea.

wow now that you mention it you are right! That was an extremely stupid thing that I did.....
But I was mid-update when I saw this thread, and the TC said to Power-Off if you wanted to cancel the update, so I kinda acted w/o thinking twice.
After doing further reading about this topic though, it just seems nintendo is doing this to cover themselves just incase they do accidentally brick some wii's with their updates, as many people have said that they can still use their wii fine after fully updating.

Looks like someone beat me to the thread subject :P
Can anyone confirm if European PAL Wiis still function/boot up backup games after being upgraded to 3.0E firmware? All I see confirmed so far is 3.0U
EDIT: Just found out on another board that someone from Australia updated to 3.0E with Wiikey and it works just fine, so I'm going to update shortly

This from mywii.com.au
Quote: ozmodchps says:
Nintendo can't detect your modchip, but I have always said that they can detect what you do, online or not.
I do mods, I done one tonight with someone that has just updated their wii to 3.0e.
I put in the wiikey config disc and it detected on the initial screen, but as soon as you click the game it will come up with an error saying
'an error has occurred. press the eject button etc'
I first thought that my config disc was playing up after using it for months. So I burnt a fresh copy....same thing!
My guess is that Nintendo can't detect anything hardware related, but they can detect what the name of the disc is that you put in. The gamecube homebrew of the wiikey config disc would have the same name worldwide.... They have probably realized the popularity of the wiikey and included code in their firmware to detect these discs.
This console has probably now been 'red flagged' and the next time there is an update, it will probably be banned from online services.
If you run the update disc on 2.2e, its fine. Its only the 3.0e firmware that can detect the disc.
I also thought that the firmware could detect if you are playing an international game (i.e. another feature of a modchip) - but then i realized that the wiikey will trick the console into thinking that the disc is PAL anyways.
This is all new, confirmed now on 3 consoles here including mine now.
So if you have updated:
- Don't stick in the wiikey config, or any game from a different region
So dont put in your wiikey disc and just wait for the next wiikey update. Good luck to all those who cheaped out and got a clone.

I'm quite sure the warning is just a combination of scare tactics and an attempt to release themselves from liability (should a future update unintentionally causes problems). There is no reason to freak out, update away.

Well I've updated, no problems at all on my European-PAL Wii :) Though the WiiKey disc is said to not work you can easily work around it using a GCOS bootdisc to load what you want instead

hmm, my theory now is, that since you see the warning message AFTER you update when you click update again, that the NEXT firmware may have some wii bricking feature for mod-chip users.

okay just found out whgat the update did
- Weather Channel now shows current weather symbol
- News Channel features scrolling headlines
- Digital Clock appears on wii menu
- Store has new search by categories, most popular, recent additions
- Store has new welcome page
- Support for AOSS router setup
- New color Scheme for Message Channel
- Disk Channel Icon - The disk does a 180 left and right
- Faster load times when leaving channels
- Faster disk read speeds
- Move contacts on address Book
- Calendar no longer displays envelopes for the amount of time you played, only messages
- Light bar goes on when disk is inserted or removed
- Accomplishments shows who you have messaged
- Fan runs now when connected to WiiConnect24
- New message pulse on message button
could it be possible that the setup disk is reading at 6X while the wii can now read at 8X?

So my questions would be: Will the update be mandatory to play future games? And will the Brickblocker prevent any new games with the update on them from updating?

The guy that said this obviously has no clue what he's talking about. It doesn't matter that its a DVD mod because it still has to communicate with the Operating system via the motherboard. Microsoft was able to disable the Xbox360 dvd mod with an update to the dashboard so it is VERY possible to do so. I'm not saying that that is what nintendo has done, I'm only saying that it is possible and don't count it out in the future.

has that game even came out in the U.S. for the wii? if you are using different region games in your wii it just may be not compatible like some other games.

i was under the impression that all games worked however from burning in a less speed the black screen was replaced with the cannot read disk message. still not reading that disk my wii play worked and the setup disk doesnt work anymore " put it in region free mode" and used brick blocker on the iso and burned at 6X speed. Im wondering if it has anything to do with the update or just the way im burning.

just use a GCOS disc to boot first, then put in your setup disc. it'll work fine.

I got brave and manually updated this afternoon to 3.0U. Here are my experiences:
1. I received NO message as others did about "if you have a modded Wii it may be disabled or whatever" -- I updated (took awhile) rebooted the console and was good to go.
2. Tested a copied NTSC game (FYI my console is NTSC) and the game worked perfectly.
3. Tested a copied PAL game (FYI my console is NTSC) and the game worked perfectly.
4. From what everyone is saying I am still not brave enough to try out my v1.2 WiiKey setup disc (I had already turned on the region override) so for the moment I have no need to run it.
Best of luck to everyone out there and let's raise a cold one to the developers of the WiiKey while we're stickin' it to the Big N! :)
Cheers!

the warning is only part of the new firmware. 2.2 doesn't have it, that's why you don't get the warning until after the fact. but that said, it doesn't mean that 3.0 is proven totally safe at all. it's just because there were no warnings programmed into the 2.2. as we can already see, setup disks don't work anymore, so something has happened.
