My old Samsung had been getting dirty-disk errors, so I decided to buy an exact match. Got it in the mail today, however, I am having difficulty getting the firmware off of my original drive. I intend to copy the original firmware back to the new one... I just want to repair the machine, not mod the firmware.
I have followed all the tutorials, but have the nForce 4 SATA controller (onboard) on the Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe.
Using the modified NF4 mtkflash, it is able to detect which port the drive is plugged into. Selecting option 1 for Master on the detected channel, the front middle green light on the 360 flashes repeatedly, and the mtkflash hangs.
I have read there is a particular SATA Via chipset that is better, but I was hoping to get this working w/ my NF4.
Can anyone think of why the middle green light would flash, but nothing happen? I have also tried different variations of when the 360 is on / off and when I enable certain things in DOS, boot the computer, etc.
So far, nothing helps.
I even went so far as to read my port info with msinfo32, with the intention of hexediting the appropriate section within the modified mtkflash exe. But, I could only ascertain the information for the first 4 bytes, since I couldn't figure out which entries to use to calculate the value.
Here's the article on hexediting I'm referring to:
Here's what I got for the first part of the tutorial:
DE105400
It's the second part, using the port info that I can't figure out.
Any help, or other explanations? I'm using the hex-editing as a last ditch effort prior to buying a new SATA controller (any preferences?), but I have a feeling it's not going to work since the drive is clearly being detected and even the 360 has a response once the reading supposedly begins.
I'm using the firmware from my old drive on the new one. I am not using any modified firmware.
I will try your suggestion. If it doesn't work, I think I'm just going to buy a new SATA controller today.
Edit: Yes, the Extreme Boot Maker is useful for getting the MTKFLASH configured properly (that's cool how it gets your hex-editing info. for you). But I still don't think that will change my 360's green light flashing repeatedly when an attempt to backup the firmware is made.
