Praetor, what about a "go to page" drop down box? wud that help ya? of course i can already see one problem with that, if u had a really long thread, there would be a lot of <option name ="#" value="#"> in the source code, hehe, and u know dRD likes his milliseconds when dealing with loading speed ;-)
