WiiKey Install Partially Working?

I just had a friend install my WiiKey clone using the quick solder method, but no backups are working, only DRE errors. He did his Wii hours before with the same method (his was authentic) and it seems to work flawlessly. I can however get into the v. 1.2 setup disk and make the reccommended changes regarding region and disc speed. This doesn't help matters.

Now I am trying to decide if I have a bad chip, splashing, or maybe just bad luck with media. His Wii is playing all these same discs no problem. Is the fact that I can run the setup disk indicative of a proper install, or could there still be something wrong with it? I don't want to remove the chip if I don't have to, so if there's a chance it's the media or something else I'd like to know. Unfortunately I don't have pics right now but if someone could at least answer the question about being able to run the setup disc it would help. TIA!

if it can read the config the installation is good, try using other kind of media, some wiis reads some kinds of dvds that others don't

thanks, i'll try a few types out today! any ones you prefer, even though it's going to vary from unit to unit anyway. I have mainly been using TYs and Maxell. Could try some Verbatims I guess.
