Hello all,

I've searched around the forum quite a bit but still have not found a direct answer to my question so I thought I would ask directly.
I am new to the DVD buring realm but have a good bit of experience with buring CD's so I don't know if that will help in the explanation. I just purchased the new Plextor 8X DVD burner and when I went to buy media it confused me as to all of the kinds of DVD's available.
My question is this :
What is the difference between DVD+R media and DVD-R media? Can anyone give me a definate answer? I have read about DVD+R General use and DVD+R authoring DVD's and wondered if there was a way you could tell just by looking at either manufacturer or by part #.
How does DVD-R and DVD+R effect quality and speed?
Any suggestions or recommendations for reading would GREATLY help.
Thanks in advance,

Matt

The major difference between 'Authoring' and 'General' DVD media is in the price ;)

The last time C't (Probably the best technical computer/technology magazine in the world) done some tests on DVD media, they seemed to rate the best DVD-R media available at the time as being better than the DVD+R media.

C't used industry-standard error testing equipment for their tests so pretty trustworthy results imho. Shame it's only available in German/Dutch :(

It doesn't really matter which type of DVD media you use, both have similar levels of compatibility and if your DVD equipment is fairly new, should be able to read either type.

More important than type, is the actual manufacturer of the media.

For a good budget choice, Ritek manufactured +/-R media is good.

Higher up in the price range, MCC/Verbatim (Mitsubishi Chemical Corp) , Taiyo Yuden or Pioneer (Very expensive over here, $6 a disc!!) are good choices.

dvd-r uses a wobble groove to calibrate disk speed and position data with out gaps. it also has lossless linking which can append data blocks with new data, with out linking blocks used in the packet writing strategy, it uses clv (constant linear velocity (same write speed all around the disk even in the inner portion) it also corrects for improper laser position because dvd-players are really picky about imperfections. DVD+R is the same basically except its wobbles are at a higher frequincy and it uses CAV (constant angluar velocity (slower in the inner faster out in the edges)also DVD+R has the capability to copy right from stamped disks because it can hold data in the inner, inner ring where stamped disks usually do, but it is locked out in filmware.

in conclusion dvd-r is better with a proven higher compatibility rate
