Philips 8x or Maxell 16x?

I previously bought some Sony 16x dvd-r and burned them at 4x since that was the highest mu burner can go. None of them worked on my ps2 however, and I'm wondering which is better to get, a philips at 8x or a maxell at 16x? I've heard that people can get problems sometimes with 16x media on their ps2, and there are no taiyo yuden discs immediately available to me.
