I have a Pioneer DVD-113 DVD reader. Suddenly, it will no longer read or play VOB files from commercial DVDs. WinDVD refuses to play the disk; Smartripper won't recognize the drive when a commercial disk is inserted (same with DVD ripper); and if I "drop" a VOB file onto WinDVD from the disk, it won't play. However, I can "see" the files on the disk in Windows Explorer, and I can open the smaller ones just fine (in a hex editor, etc.).

DVD that I have made myself play just fine (and I can copy any file from these discs). With commercial discs, even though I can't play them, I can see all the files on them from within Windows Explorer, and I can copy the smaller files from DVD to my hard drive. However, if I try to copy any of the larger VOB files from a commercial DVD, the computer crashes.

I have not "diddled" with regions (still shows all five changes available), and I have not installed any software recently. I have not done any firmware changes to the drive.

I tried uninstalling the DVD (from Win98 SE Device Manager), and then letting it reinstall at next boot. No good. I tried reflashing the firmware using firmware direct from the Pioneer site. No change. I have tried reading both DVD-5 and DVD-9 disks. Even commercial DVDs with only 2.9 GB on them don't work.

Any ideas on what else to try?

Thanks!

Added later that same day ...

Thank goodness for backups. I went back to a backup tape from six weeks ago and restored my registry. Everything works now. Just plain weird ...

I guess I should have kept the old registry to see what had changed, but I didn't. It was very strange because the drive could read small files, but choked completely on the big ones. Also, some applications wouldn't recognize the drive at all (DVD Decrypter refused to acknowledge its existence).

Normally, deleting and re-installing the device clears up the registry, but it didn't in this case. Sorry I can't provide more information, but at least there is now a record that restoring from a backup registry can possibly be a fix for this situation.
