Cheers guys,

As the PS2 is kind of reaching its end of line, I am thinking to get hold on the great games. Since I live in Japan these days, I'd like to buy a Japanese PS2, but since my Japanese is incredibly bad, I wonder if there is an easy way to play US (European would be nice) games on it. While I don't mind action games, RPGs get incredibly difficult (or boring) if you only understand a third of what is said....

Any option that doesn't include modding the original PS2 but works with the latest review would be preferred, but if you could tell me the different options would be great.

Sorry also for the very "standard" question, but since it has a bit of a twist (usually it is the other way round) and since I hope to get more detailed info (not knowing anything about the subject as I even don't own a PS2 yet), I wanted to ask directly instead of trying to search the forum. Hope you don't mind :D
In addition I want to emphasize, that I don't care about playing Backups, I really only want to play imports.

get the "chubby" PS2 vs the "slim" version and install an HD on it.

but before you install an HD, check it's compatibility first by clicking here: http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list

when your HD inquiry has been satisfied, click here: http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=ps2_installation

if the installation tips seem too complicated, stop now and get a modded PS2... BUT... if you wish to pursue it and you have the following:
1. Action Replay( http://us.codejunkies.com/shop/product_f...o2.x=3&go2.y=13 )

2. An original PS1 disc

then click here: http://exploitstation.com/articles/armax...ExploitUSB.html

when you have come this far and ready to further your PS2 gaming, click here: http://www.exploitstation.com/articles/l.../launchtut.html

hope this helps.

To be honest that sounds much more complicated than necessary. Doesn't make sense to install a HD just to play import games. I guess this implies as well to install the games to the HD, which might be a good advice if you want to have "backups" but as stated initially that is far from my desire.

As far as modchips are concerned, are there some that can be applied without soldering that would provide region free capabilities? As said that is all I care about. If it doesn't play ANY backup games, it doesn't matter to me.

Thanks a lot!

well, with that said... i believe the only way to go is buying a japanese PS2 OR look for one that is a US import.

dare i say "e-bay"?

anyways, good luck on your gaming endeavors. :)
