There was no PSX backup forum, so I figured posting here would be appropriate.

A few years back I didn't know much about backing up/virtual drives and stuff, so I asked my friend to back up my copy of tenchu. He somehow made it into an iso and left it on my harddrive. Now my actual cd broke in half =(.

So I checked out one of the guide (I don't remember if it was on this website) called "How to make a perfect backup of your psx games". I followed everything to the letter with the exception of one thing: Instead of putting a physical CD into my computer, I mounted the iso image with Alcohol 120, but still had no luck. Would what I did even work? If Perhaps I wasn't doing the disc swaps correctly?

Any help you could provide on making an iso play in a PSX would be greatly appreciated.

(On a side note, I have an earlier PSX, the bigger, box shaped one)

Thanks again!

Ok, so the only thing you did different from the guide was mounting the Tenchu ISO image to a virtual drive on your computer? If so, mounting the disc image to a virtual drive on your computer won't let you play a PSX backup on your actual PSX console, you need to physically put a blank CD-R into your CD/DVD burner, whichever one you have, and burn the ISO image with either Nero Burning ROM or Alcohol 120%. Since you have Alcohol 120% [A120], use that.

Also, just to make sure, do you have a way of booting PSX backups on your PSX console? If not, there's a few options here. There's Breaker Pro and PS-X-Change 2, both are swap discs, and then there's the modchip. The swap discs are cheaper compared to having a modchip installed in your PSX, but with a modchip, you don't have to swap games everytime. It's up to you, either way.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I mounted the Tenchu ISO into Alcohol, changed it to a ccd file, and burned it to a CD-R using Clone CD. As far as my clone cd settings went, I made sure I kept all the subchannel data to the cd.

Now, after burning all the data onto a blank cd-r (nice brand too, it was verbatim) I used the "double disk swap" method, and haven't had luck. There's a possibility that I'm not swapping correctly, but I'm 90% sure I'm doing it correctly, so maybe the problem was converting my iso to ccd? I read on another forum if you burn an iso straight up, it doesn't work...but perhaps that info was inaccurate? Thanks for your reply.

Forgot to mention, I used the double swap method with Final Fantasy 9 Disk 1. This is an old box style ps1, so I'm sure it'll work. I don't really want to buy boot discs, and I've read burning a boot disc doesn't work because the data needs to be stamped on. Modchips, same deal, I don't want to dish out the money.

Oh ok, so you converted from .iso to .ccd, and you're using FF9 Disc 1 as your boot disc on the old style PSX. I don't think converting the file format from .iso to .ccd would have caused any problems, I remember I used to burn PSX games in .ccd format a lot and the backups worked fine.

Do you still have the .iso of Tenchu? You could always try burning that with A120 at the slowest speed possible and see if it works, it should.

One more question, I know you said that you don't know much about backing up games, but have you been able to boot and play a backed up PSX game before?

I haven't been able to play a backed up PSX game before. Considering what you said about .iso and .ccd, I'm thinking it may be the timing of my swaps. Any tips?

WHOA BIG EDIT: I just got double disk swapping to work! My only issue now with the Tenchu iso is reading a memory card. It does work with epsxe though. Hm...Any ideas?

Update 2: Seems like I got the memory card problem fixed. I tried backing up my copy of Legends of LeGaia, and when I preform the first swap it the foreign copy goes to 2x, comes back down to 1x, then makes an odd scratchy sound and won't go back to 2x.

Sorry for the late reply.

That's great though! You got it to work!

So now the only problem is with your backup of Legend of Legia? (great game, BTW)

I wonder why it makes that scratchy sound, has this happened with another game you were trying to boot, or just Legia?
