hey people i have a capture device called SmartDisk that i primarliy use to copy my old vhs tapes to my computer then burn them to dvd. Firstly i tried it out on an old home movie and i got the capture to the computer using the devices software which is called Cameramate Propix DVD Wizard and the quality of the captured video was incredilbley bad, the picture would always jitter and freeze. it was seriously crap!

I need a (decent)program preferably freeware or not to basically capture the vhs tape to the computer for me to burn later, the burning process is no problem. I know that i cant get capture quality that of a dvd but the quality needs to be decent enough to watch not tremendously bad as is mine at the moment.

support and advice would be much appreciated. Thnks!!

Capturing VHS to your PC is 90% about the hardware, only a little bit about the capture software.

If you're using a "SmartDisk" (not familiar with it, sorry) to capture VHS to your PC but you're not happy with the results, odds are things won't get much better with different software to use with the SmartDisk.

You could try VirtualVCR to capture. See if that helps.

Anyways, make sure you've downloaded the latest drivers for the SmartDisk.

If the SmartDisk is a USB capture device it really should be using hardware compression. A USB capure device without hardware compression is fighting an uphill battle against dropped frames. All you can do is shut down all other processes you don't need, free up all the memory you can, and hope for the best.

I think that for under $100, the best VHS capture cards are from Hauppauge. I use a PVR-150.
