Hello! I have been reading extensively forum posts about ps2 software boots and other methods to play backups on PSTwo and now am greatly confused.
My PS2 is a slim one version 14 Unmodded.
I have some questions I am hoping to clear up.
From what I have researched it seems that USB Extreme is the best way to go for me.
Here are the questions
1. How slow is playing games with USB Extreme really?
2. Is there any way to put USB Extreme onto a memory stick with spending as little money as possible? I do not have an action replay software, USB Extreme (yet), Swap Magic, or a friend with a modded PS2. I do however have a USB Stick and and External USB 160 gig Hard drive if that is of any use for this
3. I am still a little bit unclear on how to boot elf files (In theory). Are save files on memory card also elf files? If not, how can people boot from memory card alone without any CD or Modchip? Can I do it? What would I need to have to do it. This question is a continuation of the second question. If one can run elf file from a memory card without anything special, then there should be a way to put USB Extreme onto it, and through it run backups from USB HDD.
4. Probably the most uninlightened question of all, but forgive me, I am a newbie. Is there any way to hook up a usb key to the pstwo and run whatever exploits I need to run off it to put files onto a memory card to run backups?
5. What would you recommend as the most cost effective solution to play backups on a slim ps2?
Also I want to mention that I am not cheap, just money is tight right now, so I am trying to do this as cheaply as possible. Yes I realize this statement is oxymoronic :). The second reason that I am exploring all this is because i have been told that modding a ps2 leads to laser wear and eventually it stops working. I have been unable to find out for sure if this is true or not, or if it is only true for some models. So here is the last question
6. Is it really true that modchips cause the laser to wear out? Will laser wear out even on a non modded PSTwo (Slim V14 :) ). Should I just spend the cash and get a modchip?
