I have recently bought swap magic and have tried burning games onto a 1-2xspeed dvd-rw disc. each time i try and load it it says "not a valid ps2 disc." i have tried quite a few dvd writing softwares but none have worked. i just bought some sony 1-16x DVD-R discs. could the old 1-2x discs be the problem?

The use of DVD-RW is your first problem. Do not use them since they usually won't boot or if they boot they are very bad for your ps2 laser. The second problem is you are burning your disc way too slowly. For 16x disc you should burn at atleast 8x. Read the attached link if you want further clarification.
